Despite significant changes in thefederal and state oversight and regulatory process, proposed development plans in Newport and Burke arestill on track. AnC Bio Vermont received state approval on March 30 to move forward. Groundbreaking on the84,000 square foot bio-medical manufacturing and research facilityis expected to proceed this spring.

Renaissance Block
An Act 250 permit wasissued by the District 7 Environmental Commission on March 13th to demolish the former Spates Block on the south side of Main Street. Casella Construction began demolition on Monday, March 16th and is now near completion. Demolition is the first phase of redevelopment on the site. Beforeconstruction can beginon the new Renaissance Block, applications will be submitted for additional permitsneeded for themulti-use commercial building project that willinclude hotel rooms and suites, retail space, and a restaurant and brew pub.
Northeast Kingdom InternationalAirport
The Newport City Council and Coventry select board have approved the new name for the expandingNewport State Airport.The Vermont Legislature must issue final approval for the name-change andRepresentative Michael Marcotte of Coventry (where the airport is located)sponsoredH.303 with bi-partisan support from lawmakers across Orleans Country. The bill is being considered in the House and if approved by theLegislature,will take effect on passage.Using funds already awarded by the Federal Aviation Administration, an expanded runway will be built that will allow private jets and larger planes to land at night and under all weather conditions. With its close proximity to the U.S.- Canadian border, the international airportwill also serve as a hub for the NEK Foreign Trade Zone #286.
