Weekly unemployment claims near last year's levels

Vermont Business MagazineNew unemployment claims in Vermont fell last week and remain at a relatively low level. Levels this year, which have been running consistently lower than those of last year, have edged closer to levels from 2013.Forthe week of September 27, 2014, there were 360 new, regular benefit claims for Unemployment Insurance in Vermont. This is a decrease of 38 from the previous week's total, and 48 fewer than they were a year ago.

jobs, seasonally adjustedAltogether 3,504 new and continuing claims were filed, a decrease of 109 from a week ago and 477 fewer than a year ago. The Department processed 2 First Tier claims for benefits under Emergency Unemployment Compensation, 2008 (EUC08), one fewer from the previous week.

There were no Second Tier claims for benefits processed under the EUC08 program. There were zero Tier III claims. The Tier I, II and III programs expired on December 28, 2013. Congress would need to act to renew these extended benefit programs.SEESTORY

The total for all programs was 3,506 claims, 110 fewer than last week, and 1,216 fewer than the same time last year.

Vermont's unemployment rate went up four-tenths to 4.1 percent in August, but still fifth lowest in the nation behind North Dakota 2.8 percent, Nebraska 3.6 percent, Utah 3.6 percent and South Dakota 3.6. percent.SEESTORY.
