Vermont Law School mourns Professor Cheryl Hanna

Vermont Law School on Monday announced the death of well-known and well-regarded ProfessorCheryl Hanna. She is perhaps best known to the public for her Vermont Public Radio commentaries. Hanna died Sunday. The cause of death has not been released. She was 48. The entire VLS statement follows: "It is with the most profound sorrow that we announce the untimely death of our dear colleague Professor Cheryl Hanna. A graduate of Harvard Law School, Professor Hanna was an expert in constitutional law, the United States Supreme Court, and women and the law. Her scholarship has been published in leading journals, including the Harvard Law Review, Yale Law Journal, and Michigan Journal of Gender and the Law. Professor Hanna was also a frequent media commentator, including on Vermont Public Radio and WCAX-TV 3.

"She consulted on constitutional cases and represented public interest organizations through the filing of amicus briefs in cases before state and federal courts. This included the amicus brief she and Vermont Law School students wrote on behalf of the Vermont Commission on Women in Dreves v. Hudson, the first case implicating Vermont’s Equal Pay Act. The book she co-authored, Domestic Violence and the Law: Theory and Practice, was the leading casebook on violence against women.

"She is survived by her husband and two children.

"Professor Hanna was a beloved teacher and role model to many within and beyond the Vermont Law School community. It is with heartache that we share this loss. She will be deeply missed by our faculty, staff, students, and alumni.

"A memorial service for Professor Hanna will be held at a later date. Details will be announced as plans are finalized."

Burlington Mayor Miro Weinberger sent this statement in response to the death of this friend and neighbor:

“On behalf of the City of Burlington, I express my deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Professor Cheryl Hanna. My family and I are heartbroken to know that we will no longer watch our children's school performances together or hear her wise words on VPR when we wake up in the morning. Vermont is indebted to Cheryl for her passionate work representing public interest organizations and protecting the rights of women. We will remember and honor Cheryl's work to make the world a better, more just, and less violent place for all of us, and especially our daughters.”

Paul Heintz of sevendaysvt.com wrote late Monday that: According to a statement released Monday by the Burlington Police Department, a 48-year-old woman was transported Sunday afternoon from a South End (Burlington) residence to Fletcher Allen Health Care's emergency department, where the woman died. An investigation conducted by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, according to the statement, "has revealed no indication of foul play or suspicious circumstances."
