Former FBI director Freeh releases statement through Leahy

Former FBI Director Louis Freeh and his office asked Senator Patrick Leahy (D-Vermont) to release the following statement on his behalf after Leahy visited him Friday at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, NH. Freeh was involved in a one-car accident in Barnard on Monday. See the Vermont State Police report below.

Freeh statement: "I wish to thank Senator Patrick Leahy, my close friend of 24 years, as well as my dear friends Vice President Joe Biden, Senator Tom Carper, Attorney General Beau Biden, former Senator Joe Lieberman, former Attorney General Mike Mukasey, and so many others, for their outpouring of concern following my automobile accident.

"I want to thank Director Comey and the agents and employees of the Federal Bureau of Investigation for their support and prayers as I recover. From the very first moments of the accident to the present, their devotion, vigilance and prayers have sustained me and my family. I have the greatest respect and affection for them and their families.

"I also want to express my deep appreciation to the talented medical professionals who are providing me excellent medical care. I will forever be grateful to them for their wonderful work which will enable me to recover.

"Finally, I am very grateful to my devoted family and friends for their love and extraordinary support.

Update in Crash Investigation in Barnard, VT

Barnard, VT – 8/26/14 – The investigation into yesterday’s single vehicle crash in Barnard involving Louis Freeh, age 64 of Wilmington (DE), continues today. The preliminary investigation indicates that drugs and alcohol were not factors in the crash; however the cause of the crash remains under investigation pending additional interviews. Once the investigation is complete, a Uniform Crash Report will be submitted to the Vermont Division of Motor Vehicles.

The initial report was received yesterday at 12:16PM by the Vermont State Police in Royalton regarding a single vehicle crash in the area of 2762 Vermont Route 12 in the town of Barnard, VT. Troopers from the Royalton Barracks responded immediately, along with rescue and fire personnel from the Barnard area. Freeh, the sole occupant of the 2010 Grey GMC Yukon, was transported by helicopter to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center (DHMC) in New Hampshire.

At this time, the operator continues to receive treatment for his injuries at DHMC. No one else was injured as a result of this crash.
