Weekly unemployment claims fall, remain low

New unemployment claims decreased slightly last week in Vermont, and fell farther under 500. For the week of September 14, 2013, there were 443 new, regular benefit claims for Unemployment Insurance in Vermont. This is a decrease of 33 from the previous week's total, and 77 fewer than they were a year ago.
Altogether 4,156 new and continuing claims were filed, a decrease of 85 from a week ago and 586 fewer than a year ago. The Department also processed 720 First Tier claims for benefits under Emergency Unemployment Compensation, 2008 (EUC08), 18 fewer than a week ago.
In addition, there were 22 Second Tier claims for benefits processed under the EUC08 program, which is 5 more than the week before. The Tier III program of extended benefits is being discontinued in Vermont as the state's unemployment rate has been under the federal threshold for more than three months.
The total for all programs was 4,905 claims, 97 fewer than last week and 1,319 fewer than the same time last year.
