The 2013 Killington Junior Golf Tournament contributed an estimated $225,000 to the Town of Killington economy over a 5-day period, according to a report prepared by the American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) and released this week by town officials. The AJGA-sanctioned tournament took place June 24 through 27 at Green Mountain National Golf Course.
The 143-player field featured the top junior golfers from 18 states, Canada and New Zealand. According to the report, this year's tournament brought over 2,000 individuals to town during the 5-day event, boosting local hotel and restaurant business during a seasonally low tourism period for the town. The AJGA based its estimates on information received from participants at tournament registration.
Other highlights of the report include the promotional benefits to the Town of Killington, including significant AJGA website exposure, promotion to AJGA families and players, an aggressive social media campaign, and media coverage in Vermont and around the country. As a Tournament Title Partner, the Town of Killington’s branding appeared prominently in all printed documents, online promotion, tournament signage, banners and gifts.
This was the Town of Killington’s 4th year to host the Junior Championship at Green Mountain National Golf Course, and town officials are working on an agreement to bring the event back in 2014.
"The tournament has provided a needed boost to rooms, meals and retail revenue during a historically quiet time,’ says Town Manager, Seth Webb. ‘It has also provided good exposure of our golf course to a key golf audience and we’re looking forward to continuing our relationship with the AJGA in upcoming years.’Connor O’Brien of Rowayton, Connecticut, emerged as the Boys Division victor, while Lita Guo of Auckland, New Zealand, won the Girls Division.
The American Junior Golf Association is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to the overall growth and development of young men and women who aspire to earn college golf scholarships through competitive junior golf. AJGA alumni have risen to the top of amateur, collegiate and professional golf. AJGA alumni include Tiger Woods, Phil Michelson, Paula Creamer and Vermont’s own Keegan Bradley.
