South Burlington to pave Market Street Friday

Last Thursday the City Council approved the expenditure of City funds and additional funding provided by private donors to pave Market Street, currently a dirt road.’ ‘ Due to contracting efficiencies, the City was able to save some funds on the normal paving schedule that it was able to invest in this roadway maintenance. The City’s paving contractor has provided notice they will begin paving, weather permitting,’ on Friday.
The City will hold a ribbon cutting ceremony’ Monday at 10 a.m.’ rain or shine.’ ‘
‘We are thrilled to be able to address this street which has been in dire straits for years,’ said Pam Mackenzie, Chair.’ ‘ The Council also approved striping the roadway with a bicycle lane on either side.’ Due to the lateness of the season, the striping will occur next spring.’
Market Street runs between Dorset Street at the University Mall entrance east to Hinesburg Road and provides the only connection to the Rick Marcotte Central School.’ It is also an important outlet during the holiday shopping season for the Dorset Street corridor.’
This is a temporary fix to alleviate surface conditions and dust until the Market Street Project has received all the permits necessary to reconstructs the roadway in a few years.
Traffic will be closed between Hinesburg Road and the entrance to the Rick Marcotte Central School’ Friday, November 22 from 7 a.m. until 5 p.m.’ during paving operations.’ Paving is anticipated to last for one day.
