Grow Compost picks up organic materials in new truck

Grow Compost of Vermont announces the launching of Green’ Mountain Reclaimed Organic Waste (GROW) program with the unveiling of their’ newly painted box truck which will be used to’ recover food for food rescue and to’ reclaim food scraps for transformation into soil and energy.
Grow Compost’s central Vermont-based hauling program expands’ the compost maker’s mission to protect the soil, water, and air of Vermont and to’ advocate for food justice.
‘The state of Vermont possesses incredible resources in its’ natural landscape and in the materials we often refer to as waste,’ says Lisa’ Ransom, co-owner of Grow Compost. ‘We see the potential in’ those resources and’ aim to reclaim them for a higher purpose: to feed people, to create healthy’ soils, and to produce energy.’
Grow Compost of Vermont accepts any material that is part of’ the food cycle.’ These’ materials are often referred to as’ organics,’ meaning carbon-based materials that are -- or were -- living matter.’ When landfilled,’ these materials form harmful acids and heat-trapping methane. When diverted’ from the waste stream and harnessed appropriately, these organics can provide’ nutrients for soil health’ and energy that can be transformed into renewable’ electricity and heat.
Grow Compost of Vermont partners with local organizations,’ including Vermont Technical College and the Vermont Foodbank, to redistribute the’ collected food and organic scraps according to’ their highest and best uses. The’ highest quality food will go to food rescue efforts.’ Grow Compost of Vermont will continue making’ agricultural-grade compost and living soil blends from organics,’ as they have’ since 2009. Other materials will fuel Vermont Tech’s anaerobic biodigester, a’ process slated to begin this winter.’
The new G.R.O.W.’ truck was hand painted by local artist Steve’ Miller.’ ‘ The abundant garden scene pictured’ on the truck represents the food cycle, from scraps to soil and food again.
