Weekly unemployment claims fall, remain high

New unemployment claims in Vermont fell last week but stayed over 1,000. For the week of April 27, 2013, there were 1,049 new, regular benefit claims for Unemployment Insurance in Vermont. This is an decrease of 162 from the previous week's total, and 49 fewer than they were a year ago.
Altogether 8,553 new and continuing claims were filed, a decrease of 252 from a week ago and 670 fewer than a year ago. The Department also processed 912 First Tier claims for benefits under Emergency Unemployment Compensation, 2008 (EUC08), 17 more than a week ago.
In addition, there were 30 Second Tier claims for benefits processed under the EUC08 program, which is 4 more than the week before. The Tier III program of extended benefits is being discontinued in Vermont as the state's unemployment rate has been under the federal threshold for more than three months.
The total for all programs was 9,506 claims, 227 fewer than last week and 1,953 fewer than the same time last year.
