The Sullivan Museum and History Center presents the third installment in a series of exhibits exploring Norwich University's involvement in the Civil War. ‘ These Honored Dead: Private and National Commemoration’ presents the stories of Norwich alumni from both sides of the conflict during the pivotal year of 1863. The exhibition considers the military draft and prisons, and explores mourning rituals during the Civil War period. The museum is free and open to the public. The exhibit runs from April 8 through December 20, 2013.
The Sullivan Museum will host a series of lunchtime presentations during the spring semester. The first of these programs will be held on Wednesday, April 10, at 12 p.m. in the Museum Rotunda. Linda Radtke, singer and researcher, will present a musical performance entitled ‘ The Vermont Civil War Songbook.’ Dressed in period costume, Radtke will share songs popular in Vermont during the Civil War, as well as letters from Vermonters from the era. From sentimental songs about the girl back home to satirical ballads, Radtke traces the evolution of tone in Vermont popular song, from patriotic to elegiac as the war continued. ‘ The Vermont Civil War Songbook’ features the sheet music collection from the Vermont Historical Society. You can also hear Radtke on Classic Vermont, WCVT 101.7 hosting Vermont Notes, a radio program focusing on the Vermont classical music scene. This lunchtime presentation is sponsored by the Sullivan Museum Associates and partially sponsored by the Vermont Humanities Council and free and open to the public. A light lunch will be provided.
The Sullivan Museum and History Center is located on Norwich’ s Northfield campus and is open Monday-Friday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. during the academic year. For more information call 802-485-2183, or visit the museum website athttp://www.norwich.edu/museum/.
