by Don Turner, House Minority Leader March 20, 2013 The Vermont House Republican Caucus offered a number of amendments to the transportation bill. The bill passed the House Wednesday afternoon and included an increase in the gas tax and an automatic inflator provision. Many House Republicans opposed these tax increases and voted ‘ NO’ on the bill.
The Republican caucus goals for the Transportation Bill amendments were as follows:
1) Insure that there are adequate State dollars to draw down all available Federal dollars.
2) Purify the transportation funding sources
3) All transportation infrastructure users shall pay a fair and equitable amount to use the system
4) Prohibit transportation dollars from being raided from transportation fund in future
5) Require AOT to look for efficiencies with the operation for future savings
6) Prohibit an automatic increase on the gas tax
7) Find alternative funding or cuts to replace the need to increase the gas tax
Unfortunately, each amendment was voted down by the Democrat majority. We cannot support this gas tax increase.
