The Monkton Select Board has adopted a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Vermont Gas for the construction of a natural gas transmission line in the Town of Monkton.
The agreement, which is the result of extensive negotiations between the Town of Monkton and Vermont Gas, was approved by the Monkton Select Board at a special meeting held on June 12th.
The MOU is part of the Addison Natural Gas Project, developed to provide Vermonters with more affordable, cleaner and safe energy choices. Natural gas service to the Town of Monkton is expected two years after the project is approved by the Vermont Public Service Board.
"Monkton's approval of the MOU with Vermont Gas serves the town's best interests," said John Phillips, chair of the Monkton Select Board.
"For more than six months, we've worked closely with town residents and the Monkton Select Board to negotiate the route for the project and other details," said Don Gilbert, president and CEO of Vermont Gas. "We're incredibly grateful to everyone involved for the suggestions that helped make this project even better, and we're excited to bring a less expensive, cleaner energy choice to the residents of Monkton."
Vermont Gas residential customers can save up to 45 percent ($2,000 per year) compared to fuel oil, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by as much as 26 percent. Vermont Gas' long heritage for safe and reliable operations includes its award-winning energy-efficiency programs, which reduce energy use while saving $12 million annually for homes and businesses.
