About 250 Vermont Electric Cooperative (VEC) members in the Northeast Kingdom were without power as of 6:00 am Thursday morning. Powerful thunderstorms caused severe damage on Wednesday evening in several parts of VEC’s northeast service territory and most significantly the Newport, Derby, and Island Pond areas. More than 10,000 VEC members were affected during the height of the storm. High winds and heavy rainfall caused trees to uproot and fall on power lines resulting in extensive damage to the VEC system.
VEC line workers, including contract line crews, worked throughout the night and will continue until power is restored to all VEC members. Restoration will continue throughout the morning. A few isolated outages may linger into the afternoon hours.
