Representative Larry Townsend, 66

State Representative Lawrence Townsend (D-Randolph) died Saturday at home from cancer, the Burlington Free Press reported Monday. He was 66. Governor Shumlin has ordered flags to be lowered to half staff on saturday, July 6.
Speaker of the House Shap Smith made the following statement on the passing of the three-term representative:
"I am deeply saddened by the passing of Representative Larry Townsend. The Legislature, the people of Vermont, and the people of Randolph, Braintree, Roxbury, Brookfield, and Granville have lost a representative focused on making Vermont a better place for the next generation. Since his election in 2009, Larry was a tireless advocate for his constituents, faithfully bringing their concerns to the People’s House with a steady voice and deep commitment. I will miss Larry’s keen sense of humor and sense of fairness. My thoughts are with his wife Judy and their four sons; we will all miss him greatly."
His biography provided by the Vermont Secretary of State says he was born on June 10, 1947, in Bethel, Vermont, and has been a lifelong resident of Randolph. Occupation: Co-manager of the Onion Flats, Inc. Restaurant. He was educated at Vermont Technical College, Randolph Center, Vt (Associates, 1967); Tri State University, Angola, IN; U. Mass Lowell, Lowell, Massachusetts. He is married to Judith A. (Braun) Townsend and they have four sons. Memberships: U.S. Army (1968-1971); JCI Senator (US Jaycees); Former Randolph Fire Department Member; Former Randolph Union High School Board; Former Selectman - Town of Randolph (1979 - 2011). Member of the House: (2009-2010, 2011-2012, 2013-2014).
Calling hours will be held this Friday July 5 at the Day Funeral Home on Franklin Street in Randolph from 3.30 pm to 7.00 pm.
The funeral will be held this Saturday July 6, 2013 at 9.00 AM at the Randolph Union High School Auditorium.
