Energy efficiency programs designed and implemented by the Vermont Energy Investment Corporation (VEIC) are among the most innovative and effective in the nation.
According to a recent report by the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE), the nations pre-eminent energy efficiency organization, VEIC programs in the residential, commercial, and industrial sectors are setting a standard that should be emulated in other states. The report, entitled Frontiers of Energy Efficiency: Next Generation Programs Reach for High Energy Savings, estimates that these leading edge programs, pioneered by VEIC and others, could yield a 27% reduction in electricity demand, and a 19% reduction in natural gas demand if they were deployed across the country.
VEIC has operated Efficiency Vermont, the nations first statewide energy efficiency utility, for more than a decade. It also operates Efficiency Smart, which provides energy efficiency services to a network of 49 communities in Ohio, Michigan, and Pennsylvania. VEIC is the lead partner in operation of the District of Columbia Sustainable Energy Utility (DC SEU), which provides energy efficiency and renewable energy services in Washington, DC. Since its founding in 1986, the organization has provided energy efficiency and renewable energy programs in 25 states, 6 Canadian Provinces, and 7 countries outside North America
VEIC programs that garnered recognition in the ACEEE report include:
· Efficiency Vermonts partnership with the Vermont Foodbank to distribute energy-saving light bulbs over the last several years, including more than 160,000 bulbs in 2011 alone;
· DC SEU efforts that have reduced energy costs for residents of large multifamily buildings in Washington, DC, and that have installed solar panels for qualifying homeowners in certain Wards of the City; and
· Efficiency Vermonts Multifamily Housing Initiative, which has helped improve more than 5,000 housing units across the state since 2000.
It is wonderful to share this recognition with our many partners and customers, said Scott Johnstone, VEICs Executive Director. VEIC has more than 26 years of experience working with our customers to develop pioneering programs that produce tangible and reliable energy savings. We cant wait to get to work expanding the reach of these innovative - and effective - energy solutions.
