Senator Patrick Leahy (D), Senator Bernie Sanders (I) and Congressman Peter Welch (D) Thursday announced that the US Department of Transportation is releasing another $18.25 million in emergency funds to help Vermont rebuild and repair roads and bridges destroyed or damaged by Tropical Storm Irene and by spring flooding in 2011. The total includes $16 million for costs associated with Irene and $2.25 million for costs associated with the spring floods.
The funding is part of $1.1 billion in new emergency relief funding approved by Congress, signed into law by President Obama in January, and set to be released on Friday by U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood. Approximately $4.26 million in state funds will be required to match these federal dollars.
To date Vermont has received $161 million for Irene repairs and $12.25 million for 2011 spring-flooding repairs from the Federal Highway Administration’ s Emergency Relief Program.
