Weekly unemployment claims hold steady for summer

New unemployment claims in Vermont continue to hover around 500 in the typical summer pattern of fairly low claims and little change. For the week of August10 , 2013, there were 525 new, regular benefit claims for Unemployment Insurance in Vermont. This is an increase of 1 from the previous week's total, and 95 fewer than they were a year ago.
Altogether 5,507 new and continuing claims were filed, a decrease of 26 from a week ago and 701 fewer than a year ago. The Department also processed 777 First Tier claims for benefits under Emergency Unemployment Compensation, 2008 (EUC08), 17 more than a week ago.
In addition, there were 23 Second Tier claims for benefits processed under the EUC08 program, which is 1 more than the week before. The Tier III program of extended benefits is being discontinued in Vermont as the state's unemployment rate has been under the federal threshold for more than three months.
The total for all programs was 6,309 claims, 8 fewer than last week and 1,653 fewer than the same time last year.
