Weekly unemployment claims increase slightly, back over 500

New unemployment claims in Vermont rose to slightly more than 500, as claims remain relatively low during the summer. For the week of August 3, 2013, there were 524 new, regular benefit claims for Unemployment Insurance in Vermont. This is an increase of 61 from the previous week's total, and 16 fewer than they were a year ago.
Altogether 5,533 new and continuing claims were filed, a decrease of 57 from a week ago and 705 fewer than a year ago. The Department also processed 760 First Tier claims for benefits under Emergency Unemployment Compensation, 2008 (EUC08), 17 fewer than a week ago.
In addition, there were 22 Second Tier claims for benefits processed under the EUC08 program, which is 1 more than the week before. The Tier III program of extended benefits is being discontinued in Vermont as the state's unemployment rate has been under the federal threshold for more than three months.
The total for all programs was 6,317 claims, 74 fewer than last week and 1,721 fewer than the same time last year.
