Jasper Hill takes Best in Show at ACS for Winnimere cheese

The results are in from last week's ACS conference in Madison, WI, and it is a banner year for Cellars at Jasper Hill, with several awards including Best in Show for one of its seasonal cheeses. Grafton Village Cheese was second overall. See full list of winners below, including many Vermont cheesemakers.

Winnimere is the big cheese this year, taking first place in its category as well as Best of Show overall, ACS's highest honor. It's an example of the rise of artisan cheesemaking in the United States, as well as the local culture in Vermont.
"We feel the success from this award is not about a specific batch of cheese, but the team of hardworking individuals and culture of quality, analysis and support that we've developed over the years. To us, this ribbon is for all of our cheeses and each of our employees," Jasper Hill said on its Website.
"Winnimere wasn't our only cheese to win big; Cabot Clothbound Cheddar and Willoughbyalso won first place in their categories, Landaff won second place in its category and Harbisonwon third place in its category. The complete competition results are posted here.
"Excited to taste the ACS Winners? We've created an ACS Winners' Box with three of our ribbon-winning cheeses: Cabot Clothbound Cheddar, Willoughby and Landaff. We are currently waiting for some young batches of Harbison to ripen a bit, but that cheese will be added to the selection in the next couple weeks.
"As many of you know already, Winnimere is not in season. We make Winnimere with winter's milk, when our cows' increased intake of dry hay makes for a rich milk that's conducive to high-moisture cheeses. We made a micro-batch this spring expressly to submit for judging at ACS. When the Best of Show results came in, we made a mad dash to Wisconsin to deliver the last of it to the conference to share with the attendees at the Festival of Cheese. It will be available through our website and your local cheesemonger by January 2014."
VERMONT CHEESES EARN TOP HONORS AT 2013 AMERICAN CHEESE SOCIETY COMPETITION
Vermont cheeses took the top two awards at the 2013 American Cheese Society (ACS) Competition in Madison, WI last week, as well as an impressive collection of first, second, and third place ribbons in various classes. Eleven Vermont cheesemakers were awarded a total of 30 ribbons. Winnimere from The Cellars at Jasper Hill earned Best of Show and Bear Hill from Grafton Village Cheese took Second Best of Show from 1,794 entries submitted by 257 companies’the largest ACS competition to date.
‘The ribbons just kept mounting up,’said Jeremy Stephenson, President of the Vermont Cheese Council. ‘It is a testament to the talent and dedication of our cheesemakers, and to Vermont’s unique terroir, that our tiny state was able to lead in this prestigious national competition. The fact that ribbons were awarded to both larger, well-known brands and to smaller artisan cheeses showcases Vermont’s diverse and vibrant community of cheesemakers.’
The American Cheese Society is a not-for-profit trade organization that supports the North American artisan and specialty cheese industry. A panel of 37 judges at the annual competition recognized ‘cheeses that are of the highest quality in their aesthetic and technical evaluation.’
Vermont cheeses earned 30 ribbons at the competition, including 11 first place and the top two overall awards. Multiple ribbons were earned by Boston Post Dairy (3), Cabot Creamery Cooperative (7), the Cellars at Jasper Hill (6), Grafton Village Cheese Company (4), and Vermont Creamery (4). Consider Bardwell Farm, Farms for City Kids/Spring Brook Farm, Franklin Foods, Maplebrook Farm, Shelburne Farms, and Vermont Farmstead Cheese Company also took home awards. The American Cheese Society (ACS) is a not-for-profit trade organization founded in 1983 to support the North American artisan and specialty cheese industry. ACS provides advocacy, education, business development, and networking opportunities for members of the cheese industry, while striving to continually raise the quality and availability of cheese in North America.
The cheesemakers listed below represent all of the entrants in the 2013 ACS Judging
& Competition: our largest ever, with 257 companies submitting 1,794 different products. Winners in each category are listed separately. Unlike other cheese competitions, where cheeses are only graded down for technical defects, ACS’s goal is to give positive recognition to those cheeses that are of the highest quality in their aesthetic and technical evaluation. As a result, the highest quality cheeses are those that ACS feels deserve the recognition of an award, based on a minimum number of points awarded (totaling 100 points possible) for first, second, or third place. In categories or sub-categories where the minimum number of points is not earned, no award is given.
