Y renames its building Pomerleau Family YMCA

The Greater Burlington YMCA announced the naming of its College Street facility the Pomerleau Family YMCA at a special dedication to Antonio B Pomerleau held recently in March. The historic Georgian colonial brick building has been the home of the Y since 1934 serving as its primary location for fitness, wellness and aquatics programming, adminsistration offices and one of the 26 early education and afterschool locations.
In 2009 the Greater Burlington Y opened a second physical fitness facility in Winooski. The two facilities, the Pomerleau Family Y and the Winooski Y, are branches of the Greater Burlington YMCA, along with YMCA Camp Abnaki in North Hero and more than 100 Y programs and services that take place both inside and offsite.
The naming of the Pomerleau Family YMCA was inspired by a generous gift from Pomerleau. A longtime champion of young children, Mr. Pomerleau recognized the importance of maintaining a Y presence in downtown Burlington and the need to restore, update and expand the Y facility so more people could access it.
‘ Because of Mr. Pomerleau’ s gift, the Y will be able to stay downtown for another 147 years or more.’ said Mary Burns CEO and President in her remarks at the dedication where most of Mr. Pomerleau’ s family was in attendance. ‘ We will be able to respond to the changing needs of our community and serve as a cornerstone for a strong and vibrant community. The potential for this beautiful building is very exciting and the desire to remain in the heart of Burlington is great.’
The Greater Burlington YMCA is a non-profit organization with a mission to build a strong community by involving youth, adults and families in programs and activities that develop spirit, mind and body.
