Newport City Renaissance Corporation designated as accredited National Main Street Program

The Newport City Renaissance Corporation has been designated as an accredited National Main Street Program for meeting the commercial district revitalization performance standards set by the National Trust Main Street Center. Each year, the National Trust and its partners announce the list of accredited Main Street® programs that have built strong revitalization organizations and demonstrate their ability in using the Main Street Four-Point Approach® methodology for strengthening their local economy and protecting their historic buildings.
â We congratulate this yearâ s nationally accredited Main Street programs for meeting our established performance standards,’says Doug Loescher, director of the National Trust Main Street Center. â Accredited Main Street programs are meeting the challenges of the recession head on and are successfully using a focused, comprehensive revitalization strategy to keep their communities vibrant and sustainable.â
The organizationâ s performance is annually evaluated by the Vermont Department of Economic, Housing and Community Affairs which works in partnership with the National Trust Main Street Center to identify the local programs that meet 10 performance standards. These standards set the benchmarks for measuring an individual Main Street programâ s application of the Main Street Four-Point Approach® to commercial district revitalization. Evaluation criteria determines the communities that are building comprehensive and sustainable revitalization efforts and include standards such as developing a mission, fostering strong public-private partnerships, securing an operating budget, tracking economic progress, and preserving historic buildings. This is the second year in a row that Newport VT has received national accreditation. This year, Newport is one of only six of the 2 Vermont Designated Downtowns to receive this national recognition.
Newport received designation as a Main Street City in 2007 and so began the process of downtown revitalization. Newport City Renaissance Corporation (NCRC) serves as a catalyst for transforming Newportâ s community and economic development. The NCRC does this by advancing and enhancing the economic environment, development of a cohesive and welcoming City design and promoting Newport as a destination for tourism and business investment.

Newport may have been the last of 23 Vermont Downtowns to receive its Vermont Downtown designation, however, since 2009 it has been first in the state to receive a grant from American Institute of Architects (AIA) for a Regional/Urban Design Assistance Team (R/UDAT) and first in the state to adopt form-based code promoting smart development downtown.
The National Trust for Historic Preservation, a privately funded nonprofit organization, works to save Americaâ s historic places to enrich our future.www.PreservationNation.org.
