The Federal DC Circuit Court of Appeals Tuesday upheld EPA standards for the regulation of greenhouse gas emissions. Vermont and 16 other states, the City of New York and a number of environmental groups helped defend various EPA standards, including its â Endangerment Finding’‘that motor vehicle greenhouse gas emissions contribute to climate change that endangers public health and welfare.
â Thisdecisionhelps clear the way for the federal government to regulate greenhouse gas emissions and deal with climate change,’said Attorney General William H. Sorrell. â We have been fighting this battle for a number of years, and it is rewarding to see EPAâ s standards upheld.â

Vermont joined a coalition of states and other entities in defending the Endangerment Finding based on substantial scientific research and the consensus of scientists in the area of climate change. The appeals court also upheld new motor vehicle emission standards for greenhouse gas emissions of cars and light trucks and separate regulations providing a plan and schedule for phasing in standards for large stationary sources of greenhouse gases such as power plants and industrial facilities.
Vermont joined a group led by Massachusetts that also included California, Connecticut, Delaware, Iowa, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, Rhode Island and Washington, and the City of New York, as well as a number of environmental organizations, in intervening in the various appeals.
