Ethan Allen is the recipient of the Northeastern Loggers Associationâ s (NELA) 2011 Outstanding Use of Wood Award for its operations in Orleans and Beecher Falls, Vermont. NELA is a regional trade group representing more than 2,000 members of the Northeast and Lake States' logging, sawmilling, and forest products community.

The company has a combination sawmill and dimension mill in Beecher Falls, Vermont, as well as a wood furniture manufacturing facility in Orleans, Vermont. The facility in Beecher Falls supplies the companyâ s wood furniture manufacturing sites in both Vermont and North Carolina with kiln-dried lumber and machined parts made from logs and lumber from the northeast region. Wood chips and sawdust, byproducts of these manufacturing operations, are also put to good use: They are burned to provide steam energy for heat and reused for electric co-generation. This has allowed the company to drastically reduce oil usage in the Vermont facilities, which hope to become oil-free operations by 2013.
Each year NELA recognizes the significant achievement of individuals and companies in the Northeast and Lake States region. The Outstanding Use of Wood Award is one of eight awards given by the NELA annually and presented at the Annual Loggerâ s Banquet. The 2012 banquet was held on the evening of May 10th in South Burlington, Vermont.
Ethan Allen has also begun to implement the Enhancing Furniture's Environmental Culture (EFEC) program in all of its manufacturing facilities. Launched by the American Home Furnishings Alliance (AHFA) in 1999, EFEC is an environmental management system that requires companiesâ on a facility-by-facility basisâ to analyze and better understand the environmental impact of their processes, raw materials, and finished products.
