Burlington School District Superintendent Jeanne Collins has announced the appointment ofHenriSparksto the position of Equity Director.
This position is part of the new Diversity and Equity Office, created under the districtâ s recently released plan to address issues of equity and diversity in Burlington Schools.

With his long time understanding of the community and our families, and his commitment to the success of all students, he will bring the right amount of experience and passion to the role of Equity Director. I look forward to working closely withHenriin achieving a welcoming climate for all students and families."
Sparksis currently the Coordinator of Students and Families at Burlington High School. In his new role, he will lead the Equity Team of designated employees in responding to complaints, reviewing data, and providing technical assistance across the district in the areas of harassment and discrimination.
Having been in this district for the past 17 years, Sparks has a keen understanding of the environment and culture that exists here, both positive and negative. He notes, " Through my own personal experiences, situations I have witnessed, and those I have been informed of, it is clear that inequities do exist. It is my belief that the community of Burlington can overcome these shortcomings and move forward to better serve and develop the youth and families in our schools. In accepting the role of director of equity I am aware that this work is not easy and will at times be challenging and uncomfortable, but I am confident that with collaboration and dedication we can cultivate an environment that fosters authentic respect and value for one another. I look forward to realizing these goals."
In the restructuring of the Office of Diversity and Equity in the District, the current Director, Dan Balon, is realigning his position as the Director of Diversity Education and Engagement. Balon's work will be focused on professional development, assisting with curriculum resources, and working to build an inclusive, welcoming and bias-free environment for all students, staff and families. "This area is Dan's strength," noted Collins. "His experience will impact the District from the classroom to school culture."
A third position, a Recruitment and Retention Specialist, will focus on the recruitment and retention of a diverse, talented staff, to benefit all of Burlingtonâ s students and best prepare them to enter the diverse and challenging workforce. This position is currently advertised and is anticipated to be filled prior to the start of the school year.
