Approaching the one-year anniversary of Tropical Storm Irene's historic flooding,Vermontemployees ofGreen Mountain Coffee Roasters, Inc.(GMCR) (NASDAQ: GMCR) will sponsor and participate in their eighth annual River Cleanup of theWinooski River. The event is held in conjunction with American Rivers' National River Cleanup®, a nationwide effort to keep America's waterways clean.

During the work week ofAugust 6, 2012, GMCR employee volunteers will use paid time off to pick up trash in and around Vermont'sWinooski River, starting inMontpelierand working their way towardWaterbury.More than 160 GMCR employees volunteered over 700 hours and removed over 800 tires, almost four tons of scrap metal, and three tons of trash from theWinooski Riverat last year's River Cleanup. This year, that number is likely to reflect the remnants of the devastation caused by Tropical Storm Irene, the state's worst natural disaster in nearly a century.
"Green Mountain Coffee Roasters has a longstanding commitment to helping communities," saidKaren Yacos, Director of Domestic Community Outreach at GMCR. "After the devastation caused by Tropical Storm Irene last year, River Cleanup gives us all another opportunity to do so in our own backyard here in Waterbury."
The annual River Cleanup event is part of the company's Community Action for Employees (CAFE) program, which allows employees to spend up to 52 hours per year volunteering for nonprofit and community-based organizations during normal work hours. GMCR employees spent a total of nearly 30,000 volunteer hours working with organizations in local communities in its fiscal 2011.
GMCR has hosted two river cleanups in other locations this year. Employees at theKnoxville, Tennesseesite removed approximately 8,100 pounds of trash from theTennessee River, and volunteers from GMCR's Keurig Business Unit inReading, Massachusettsremoved more than 12 tons of trash from the banks of theMerrimack RiverinLowell.
Considered the most successful stream cleanup program in the country, National River Cleanup is an annual program sponsored by American Rivers that raises public awareness of the magnitude of trash accumulating in our nation's waterways and gives individuals the opportunity to take action for their local river or stream.
