Weekly unemployment claims increase, still high

Weekly unemployment claims in Vermont remains at a relatively high level. For the week there were 1,159 new regular benefit claims for Unemployment Insurance in Vermont. This is an increase of 141 claims from the week before but is 494 fewer than last year's total.

Altogether 9,393 new and continuing claims were filed, a decrease of 71 from a week ago and 2,860 fewer than a year ago. The Department also processed 1,480 First Tier claims for benefits under Emergency Unemployment Compensation, 2008 (EUC08), 8 fewer than a week ago. In addition, there were 736 Second Tier claims for benefits processed under the EUC08 program, which is 2 more than the week before.
