A local design team modernized a student center that was slated for demolition and received a first place Education Design Award for the project this spring. Two members of the design team from Burlington, New England Floor Covering and Freeman French Freeman architects, were recognized at the Starnet Worldwide Commercial Flooring Partnership awards ceremony in Marco Island, Florida.
“We are fortunate to have design partners who strive for and meet the high standards of our clients,” said Berglind Davis, Senior Interior Designer for Freeman French Freeman. “New England Floor Covering did an exceptional job helping us achieve our sustainable goals for this project that was once slated for demolition.”

Carpet in Proctor’s Hall’s newly renovated dining facility was made with a “Cleaner and Greener” certified manufacturing process from a carpet mill that uses recycled material in the manufacturing process with zero waste to the landfill.
Built in 1959, the 44,000sf Proctor Hall was renovated to retain its historical character and the students’ expressed desire of keeping it “non-glitzy” and “relaxed retro.” It was equally important to select flooring materials that reinforced Middlebury College’s national reputation as a leader in sustainable initiatives. As such, all ceramic tile, linoleum, carpet and rubber flooring were chosen because of their recyclable content, durability, manufacturing process and waste stream reduction.
The Starnet Design Awards are an annual competition which recognizes the members of Starnet, the world’s largest cooperative of commercial flooring contractors, and their architectural design partners.
