John H. Josh Fitzhugh, president and chief executive officer of Union Mutual of Vermont Companies, announced today that Thomas H. MacLeay has been elected to the Board of Directors of the Union Mutual Fire Insurance Company and New England Guaranty Insurance Company, Inc.
MacLeay is the chairman of the board of National Life Group and recently retired as National Life s president and CEO after a 32-year career with the company.
Tom brings a wealth of experience and skills to our Board, said Fitzhugh. His tenure at National Life was marked by exceptional growth and a healthy effort to diversify the business. He knows insurance and he understands the unique and important role companies like Union Mutual and National Life have in our marketplace.
MacLeay joined National Life in 1976 as a security analyst, rapidly advancing through the management ranks and serving in pivotal positions at critical times in the company s growth and expansion. He became president and chief operating officer in 1996; in 2002 he was named chief executive officer and chairman of the board. He retired as president and CEO at the end of 2008.
MacLeay and his wife Charlotte, who both grew up in Windsor, Vermont, live in Montpelier. They have two grown children, David MacLeay and Kate MacLeay Crespo, and two grandchildren.
Union Mutual of Vermont Companies consist of Union Mutual Fire Insurance Company and New England Guaranty Insurance Company, both headquartered in Montpelier, as well as an affiliated company, Eastern Mutual Insurance Company, located in Greenville, N.Y. The three companies write property and casualty insurance in New England and New York. Union Mutual was founded in Montpelier in 1874.
