Historic West Monitor Barn boasts state of the art communications infrastructure

The Vermont Youth Conservation Corps (VYCC) has joined the growing list of educational facilities that are able to take advantage of a direct fiber-optic connection. The historic West Monitor Barn was recently connected in the latest phase of a Waitsfield and Champlain Valley Telecom system upgrade that includes parts of East Main Street and Snipe Ireland Road. Approximately 62 customers in Richmond are now receiving high-speed Internet and telephone services via fiber-to-the-home technology as a result of this upgrade. Fiber-optic technology is a highly reliable and scalable technology that has the potential to offer speeds of more than 100 Mbps.
“While the field work we do may be very traditional in its appearance, we are in fact an organization that specializes in training today’s youth to be tomorrow’s leaders,” said VYCC executive director, Thomas Hark. “We rely heavily on technology to manage that curriculum and to produce our final work product. Thanks to Waitsfield and Champlain Valley Telecom, we now have a connection to the world that rivals any university campus.”
“Schools and public facilities remain central to our upgrade plans,” said Bill Fogg, Network Planner. “In addition, we have brought fiber connections to companies like Small Dog Electronics and the Basin Harbor club, both of which are highly dependent on advanced communications infrastructure. We are currently deploying more and faster fiber optics to our remote switching sites and upgrading all of these sites to next generation DSL equipment, which will provide speeds up to 24Mbps to our customers.”
Other educational facilities recently upgraded to a fiber connection include Champlain Valley Union High School, Charlotte Central School, and Mt. Abraham High School. Camel’s Hump Middle School, Hinesburg Community School, and Waitsfield Elementary School will all be connected early this winter.
As new developments comes online, fiber will be the standard, as is the case with the Thistle Hill housing development in Hinesburg, which when complete will include 43 homes.
