Cambridge Village Market Named "Retailer of the Year"

BURLINGTON, VT - Bruce Macmillan and the Cambridge Village Market, were honored by the Vermont Grocers' Association with the VGA "Retailer of the Year" award during the association's annual convention at the Sheraton Burlington. The award was presented in recognition of their involvement with the community, food industry, store operations and customer service. The Cambridge Village Market dates back to the 1850's and for the first half of the 20th century served the area with community lockers, where customers could store refrigerated items before they had their own refrigerators and freezers. Bruce and his family (Susan and son Alex) purchased the market in 1992. Under Bruce's ownership the market has doubled in size and grown from 6 employees to 26 today. They strive to support local farms by selling local produce whenever possible. In addition to the Vermont Grocers' Association, the market is also a member of the Vermont Alliance of Independent Country Stores, a group of some of the state's historic country and general stores. Bruce is active in the community and is a member of the area Rotary Club. The store contributes to many local causes and events. They are truly a community based store. Mike Henry, a retail business consultant, commented, "The market is a study and imaginative and creative ways to effectively utilize space." "We are very pleased to see Bruce and his store recognized with this award. They are dedicated to serving their customers and community as well as the food industry," said Jim Harrison, VGA president, who presented the award. The Vermont Grocers' Association is a statewide organization representing approximately 680 stores and 250 suppliers to the industry. The presentation took place at the association's annual convention at the Sheraton Burlington Hotel on September 27, 2008. 135 North Main Street, Suite 5, Rutland, VT 05701, 802-775-5460, [email protected]
