Schoellkopf/Design Group Receives National Award

Jeff Schoellkopf Design/The Design Group was presented with an AIA award for green and affordable housing for the planning and design of Cobb Hill Cohousing at a ceremony at the AIA National Convention in Los Angeles.
Cobb Hill, in Hartland, VT, is a resident developed housing and farm restoration project, with a deep commitment to environmental sustainability, cooperative community development, and organic agricultural micro enterprises. Schoellkopf Design provided planning, architectural design, and construction administration services for the project.
"We're honored by the award, and pleased that the AIA is recognizing the importance of integrating green design in affordable housing. We have to thank the amazing group of dedicated residents at Cobb Hill for their commitment and vision to develop this project," says Schoellkopf.
Completed in 2003, Cobb Hill includes a cluster of 22 homes and a common house on 4 acres of a 265 acre farm. Three of the homes were subsidized by the sale of conservation rights on the farm and private fundraising. The project was supported by a loan from the Chittenden Socially Responsible Banking Fund. Environmental features include energy efficiency, passive and active solar systems, water conservation, composting toilets, local and certified materials sourcing, a shared neighborhood wood fired heating system, and a gravity fed water system. The project is Energy Star rated and has won two previous awards from Efficiency Vermont. More information can be found at www.aia.org, www.sustainer.org, and www.efficiencyvermont.com
Project team members include Jeff Schoellkopf, AIA, principal planner and architect, Jim Edgcomb, AIA, Chris Cook, Erin Liston, Paul Hanke, and Peter Hudson. Project partners included Energysmiths of Meridan, NH and Engineering Ventures of Burlington, VT.
The Design Group, based in Warren, VT, is currently working on a variety of commercial (including hotels, banks, stores, offices, restaurants, and shopping centers), residential, town planning, and resort housing in New England and the mid-Atlantic region.
