Medicine on Everest: The Ultimate Wilderness

Guest lecturer, Luanne Freer, MD, FACEP, will present "Medicine on Everest: The Ultimate Wilderness" on Thursday, January 19, 2006 from 6:30-7:30 pm at Topnotch Resort and Spa in Stowe, Vermont. This lecture is part of the 24th Annual Continuing Medical Education (CME) Winter Conference of the Physician Assistant Academy of Vermont (PAAV). The lecture is open to the public with a suggested donation of $5 to benefit the Himalayan Rescue Association - USA.
According to program chair, Cary Stratford, PA-C, Dr. Freer's talk is a wonderful travelogue of medicine practiced in one of the most austere and majestic settings on earth. It is an honor to have the Founder and Director of the Everest Base Camp Medical Clinic present her experience over the years as we come to appreciate the challenges of medicine and the physiology of altitude and cold.
Dr. Freer is a board certified emergency physician, wilderness medicine expert, and veteran volunteer for the Himalayan Rescue Association. She heads the altitude-experienced medical staff at the Everest Base Camp Medical Clinic. Established in 2003 by Dr. Freer to coincide with the 50th anniversary celebration of Hillary and Norgay's first ascent of Everest, the Everest Base Camp Medical Clinic served 86 patients the first year of operation 90% of whom were climbers and their support staff; the remaining 10% were trekkers and the media (50% Nepali and 50% foreigners). The mission of the Everest Base Camp Medical Clinic includes providing native Nepali and Sherpa people of the Khumbu with free/low cost health care.
