Access Energy to Build Major Clean Energy Plant in Ludlow
July 7, 2005
LUDLOW, Vt. B A major clean energy plant is coming to Ludlow, generating millions in new investment, dozens of new jobs and a reliable, homegrown source of electricity for Vermont.
Access Energy, LLC, plans to build a 20 megawatt biomass power plant in an industrial park here. Local business and political leaders strongly supported the project at a press conference today, calling it a win-win for Ludlow and Vermont.
AAs the impact of global warming intensifies, this facility can be part of the solution,== said Bob McClenachan, President of Access Energy. AThe plant will provide enormous economic and environmental benefits to Vermont and the town of Ludlow.==
The announcement comes shortly after the Vermont General Assembly passed and Governor Jim Douglas signed a renewable energy law requiring utilities to buy increasing amounts of clean energy. The 20 megawatt woodchip plant meets the law=s green criteria and will help Vermont utilities meet clean energy requirements at stable power prices.
AWe are thrilled to have such an exciting project for Ludlow,== said Ron Bixby, president of Ludlow Economic Corp. AIt means new jobs, clean energy, and major tax improvements for the town. Access Energy has a record of success and achievement and we are looking forward to working together.==
Other benefits of the new plant include:
C At least 20 full-time jobs associated with plant operation, including a full-time forester.
C Up to 50 full-time jobs for fuel procurement and transportation.
C More than 150 construction jobs.
C A $45 million increase to the property tax base of Ludlow.
C The use of wood, which will enhance the health of Vermont=s woodlots and forests.
C Stable long-term power pricing.
The company expects the project to commence commercial operation in early 2008.
