Donate Unused Phones on Earth Day

Thu, 04/17/2003 - 8:00pm -- tim

This Earth Day, April 22, Verizon Wireless, the nation’s largest wireless provider, is encouraging consumers to protect the environment and give back to the community at the same time by donating no-longer-used wireless phones and equipment to its HopeLineSM phone recycling program. Since 1995 Verizon Wireless has collected more than one million wireless phones from consumers. This has kept over 200 tons of electronics waste out of landfills, and has benefited hundreds of victims of domestic violence nationwide. With as little effort as it takes to clean out a junk drawer, an old wireless phone can become a lifeline rather than a landfill addition.
Customers of any wireless carrier can easily donate a wireless phone – regardless of condition – at any of the more than 1,200 Communications Stores nationwide, or by mail.
“HopeLine helps make the world a better place: first, by helping victims of domestic violence by providing them with a lifeline, and second, by offering an environmentally friendly alternative to just throwing handsets away,” said Denny Strigl, president and CEO of Verizon Wireless. “We have collected more than one million phones – an amazing and encouraging milestone – yet more than 137 million consumers in the U.S. currently own wireless phones, many of whom tend to upgrade as technology becomes more advanced. If each person takes a few minutes to donate their used wireless phone to HopeLine, we can help domestic violence victims while also being Earth friendly.”
Along with individual donations, two of the nation’s leading companies have recently joined the fight against domestic violence by encouraging employees to donate to HopeLine. General Electric’s Elfun Society – a global organization of GE volunteers committed to improving the community through volunteerism, leadership, and camaraderie –will hold phone drives at office locations throughout the country this Spring. Ernst & Young’s environmental initiative EcoCare has already donated several hundred phones through two pilot programs and plans to expand those efforts around the country. Wireless phones and equipment donations are tax deductible and can be donated at any Verizon Wireless Communications Store, including the store located at:
1335 Shelburne Road
South Burlington, VT
Alternatively, donated wireless phones and equipment can be sent to:
Verizon Wireless HopeLine
c/o ReCellular Inc
2555 Bishop Circle W.
Dexter, MI 48130
