VSA Vermont announces volunteer training series: Disability Awareness Oct 13

VSA Vermont, an Essex-based arts and education non-profit organization, is hosting three volunteer trainings this September and October at the Fletcher Free Library in Burlington, VT. The trainings are supported in part by a grant from NobleHour through the generosity of an anonymous donor within the GiveWell Community Foundation. All three of the training workshops are open to volunteers, service learning students and collaborative partners who will be participating in VSA Vermont events or programs.

TRAINING 1: Working as a Sighted Guide and Verbal Describer

Tuesday, 9/13/16, 6:00-8:00 PM 

Fletcher Free Library - Fletcher Room, 2nd Floor

This informative and hands-on, experiential workshop is for volunteers, service-learning students, and collaborative partners who will be welcoming people with low vision or blindness at a VSA Vermont event or program. Participants will learn about sighted guide and verbal description and then have an opportunity to practice the skills.

TRAINING 2: Learning About Autism

Wednesday, 9/28/16, 6:00-8:00 PM

Fletcher Free Library - Fletcher Room, 2nd Floor

This workshop is for volunteers, service-learning students, and collaborative partners who will be welcoming people identified on the Autism Spectrum at a VSA Vermont event or program. Offered in a panel discussion format, participants will hear stories and insights from a variety of perspectives.

Training 3: Disability Awareness

Thursday, 10/13/16, 4:00-6:00 PM

Fletcher Free Library – Pickering Room

This workshop is for all of VSA VT volunteers, service-learning students, and collaborative partners.  It will include introductory information about various disabilities, people first language, disability access symbols, communication strategies, accessibility and accommodations, and more.
