Vermont Historical Society Announces 2023 Vermont History Day, April 8

The Vermont Historical Society (VHS) will once again host Vermont History Day, an annual educational competition for middle and high school aged students to present their work and earn a chance to compete at the National History Day competition. Over 230 students from around the state will compete at this year’s event will take place on Saturday, April 8th at UVM’s Davis Center in Burlington.

Vermont History Day is coordinated by VHS and is an exciting educational program that encourages students to develop research and critical thinking skills through the study of history. Affiliated with National History Day (NHD), the program is open to Vermont students in grades five through twelve and home study students ages ten to eighteen.

National History Day poses a new theme each year to challenge students to frame and explore some aspect of a historical topic. This year’s theme is titled “Frontiers in History: People, Places, Ideas.” Participating students can enter a project in one of five categories: documentary, exhibit, paper, performance, or website.

Students who place first or second in their category will be invited to participate in the annual National History Day competition alongside their peers from across the United States. This year’s NHD will take place between June 11-15, 2023 at the University of Maryland, College Park.

Vermont History Day is made possible by the George W. Mergens Foundation, Peter Swift and Diana McCargo, Johnson Family Foundation Fund, The Jack and Dorothy Byrne Foundation, Community National Bank, M&T Bank, Vermont Mutual Insurance Group, and Northfield Savings Bank.
