Friday, Nov. 18:  UVM to Host Third Vermont Youth Climate Summit

WHAT:

  • Against a backdrop of shifting federal policy on climate change signaled by the new administration, the University of Vermont will host the third annual Vermont Youth Climate Summit.
  • More than 130 high school students from 16 high schools around the state will meet at UVM to hear from experts and then develop climate actions plans for their high schools designed to reduce carbon emissions. Student will also report on the impact of plans implemented last year. 
  • Students will attend eight workshops on various aspects of climate action planning.

In addition to the high school students and their teachers …

  • Three UVM students planned the day and will be on hand for interviews, including junior environmental studies major Gina Fiorile, one of eight Americans honored at the Obama White House in 2015 for their “extraordinary work to enhance climate education and literacy across the country.” She also attended the Paris Climate talks.
  • Plenary speakers include Jay O’Hara, co-founder of the Climate Disobedience Center, and Mamie Parker of M.A. Parker & Associates, a motivational speaker and former assistant director of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
  • Three representatives from the Senator Bernie Sanders office will attend, including Katie Thomas, the senator’s policy advisor on energy and the environment.
  • Jon Erickson, the David Blitterdorf Professor of Sustainability Science & Policy at UVM, who was the faculty advisor for the event, will also be available for interview.

WHERE: Top floor of the UVM Davis Center. 

WHAT ELSE: The UVM student organizers and the high school students are passionate advocates of the need to take action to address climate change. We will work with media to identify students willing to be interviewed about changes in federal climate change policy and the increased importance in coming years of grass roots initiatives.
