The University of Vermont’s College of Education and Social Services (CESS) and the Vermont Agency of Education (AOE) will honor outstanding teachers throughout Vermont and Vermont’s 2020 Teacher of the Year at the 39th annual Outstanding Teacher Day on Thursday, December 5, 2019, at the University of Vermont (UVM).

Hosted by CESS and AOE for the third consecutive year, the event is a culmination of each organization’s longstanding annual ceremonies dedicated to Vermont educators. Vermont Secretary of Education Dan French and CESS Dean Scott Thomas will recognize excellence and innovation in teaching throughout all of Vermont’s school districts and supervisory unions; celebrate educators’ powerful impact on children, families, schools and communities in Vermont; and honor the 2020 Vermont Teacher of the Year and distinguished finalists in the Teacher of the Year Competition.

For nearly 40 years, UVM has annually recognized outstanding teachers throughout the state at a ceremonial event. Traditionally the event has honored educators from each supervisory union or school district, which are invited to nominate one teacher at the elementary/middle school level, one at the secondary level, and one at the technical center level.

Since 1964, AOE has recognized outstanding Vermont teachers through the Vermont Teacher of the Year award. The 2020 Vermont Teacher of the Year will travel statewide visiting schools and working with teachers. They will also become Vermont’s candidate for the National Teacher of the Year award, sponsored by the Council of Chief State School Officers. They will travel to Washington, D.C., in the spring for the national awards conference, culminating in a reception at the White House.
