“Step Into Action” Recovery Walk Takes Place on September 26
Burlington, VT – Everyone is in recovery from some challenge in their life of which they needed social support. Individuals and allies to those in recovery from addiction are standing in solidarity with each other to promote the positive change that is possible with the support of a community. Throughout September, many communities in Vermont and around the nation are coming together to raise awareness and celebrate those on their recovery journey during National Recovery Month.
In Chittenden County, the “Step Into Action” Recovery Walk is an annual event taking place on Saturday,
September 26 (rain or shine) at the Unitarian Universalist Society in downtown Burlington. This year the walk will benefit non-profit, peer support recovery centers and programs around the state. Funds raised will enable these programs to continue serving those seeking assistance in their recovery by providing peer support in a safe, substance-free environment. In addition to the 1 ½ mile Recovery Walk through downtown Burlington, the day’s events will include family-friendly activities, music, food, and will feature inspiring and informative speakers, including TJ Donovan, Chittenden County State’s Attorney, and personal stories of perseverance and strength from Jim DiReda and Jack Maroney. DiReda and Maroney are both accomplished authors, recovering addicts, and strong supporters of the recovery community from the Boston, MA area.
Substance addiction is estimated to impact 1 in 3 families, and the Governor has helped highlight how our state is affected, according to the Vermont Department of Health. The “Step Into Action” Recovery Walk is an important community event as it shines a light on those who are courageously walking through their recovery, and allows them, as well as their families and friends, an opportunity to celebrate their journey.
Many organizations contributed to the planning of this event including Burlington Laboratories, Vermont Association for Mental Health and Addiction Recovery (VAMHAR), UVM’s Catamount Recovery Program, Vermont Foundation of Recovery, and the Women’s Oxford House.
