Second Middlebury Arts Walk of the 2014 Season on June 13th
The 2014 Middlebury Arts Walk season continues with over 25 locations throughout Middlebury featuring a wonderful variety of the visual and performing arts. This Friday, June 13th a special feature of bicycles turned into art by local artists will be exhibited throughout the downtown and Marble Works celebrating the inaugural Vermont Gran Fondo.
Middlebury Arts Walk is a free event (for artists, venues, and attendees) and is held the second Friday of the month from 5 to 7 pm. In many cases the art is on display all month long – not just that evening.
Featured Exhibits
Recycled Bicycles! You’ll see a dozen re-cycled bicycles around downtown and Marble Works that have been turned into art by local artists. Some are recognizable as bicycles and some have been completely dismantled and put back together again giving them new life and purpose. The bicycles were donated by Bike-Recycle Vermont/Local Motion. Many of these bikes are available for sale.
Zone Three Gallery, 152 Maple Street, 3rd Floor features “Obsession to the third Power – Crush” a suspended bicycle sculpture created by Rachel Baird with welding assistance at Nop Metalwork’s. Also there will be a special appearance by Gorilla Arts – You’ll know it when you meet up with one of these anonymous artists who will be on bikes around town and in the gallery giving you a choice of real art or the real “thing”. On exhibit in the gallery will be an exhibit of M P Landis – a collection of Cape Cod monoprints and abstract mixed media series created in Middlebury.
Vermont Folklife Center, 88 Main Street: “Discovering Community – Media by Young People Exploring Their Own Lives and the World Around Them” – showcasing 100 plus documentary media works produced in the last nine months by K-12 students and at-risk populations.
Town Hall Theater, Jackson Gallery, Merchants Row at South Street, will be celebrating the work of three woodblock artists: Jane Eddy, Barbara Ekedahl and Ray Hudson. Their multi-layered wood block prints will be exhibited along with information on their creative process. The Artist’s reception will be during Arts Walk, Friday evening June 13th, 5-7 PM.
Edgewater Gallery, 1 Mill Street, will also be celebrating a new exhibit with an opening reception during Arts Walk on June 13th. New paintings by the Waitsfield artist and Middlebury alumna Cynthia Kirkwood with a focus on bright and cheerful color will be exhibited.
51 Main at the Bridge, 51 Main Street. Lincy Sullivan, a local artist and hair stylist goes under the pseudonym “Nauka79”. Inspired by her native country of Papua, New Guinea, it’s colors and traditional lines, Lincy’s prints depict bold outlines, bright colors and flowing lines that pop off the canvas, given them almost 3D effect. Her designs are truly from her mind’s eye and are left up to the views to interpret what they see in the picture.
Middlebury Arts Walk also welcomes a new venue - Otter Creek Kitchenware and Electronics, 211 Maple Street in Marble Works.
Be sure to look for the pink boot throughout Middlebury and find the SunCommon Pop-up Gallery at Canon Park.
