Salman Rushdie’s UVM Appearance to Air on Vermont PBS

Renowned author Salman Rushdie’s sold-out January 14th appearance at the University of Vermont will be recorded live and aired in a weekend broadcast by Vermont PBS. Vermont’s statewide public television station will air Rushdie’s talk in several weekend timeslots on two of its four channels.

Appearing at the University’s Ira Allen Chapel, Rushdie is scheduled to speak on the importance of storytelling and imagination.  His talk is titled, “What’s the Use of Stories That Aren’t Even True?” Rushdie’s 1990 children’s book, Haroun and the Sea of Stories, was recently selected by the Vermont Humanities Council for its statewide Vermont Reads program.

Vermont PBS will broadcast Rushdie’s remarks on its new HD channel, Vermont PBS PLUS, on Saturday, Jan. 17, at 7 p.m. The program will also enjoy three airings on the station’s WORLD channel – Friday, Jan. 16, at 9 p.m.; Saturday, Jan. 17, at 6 p.m.; Sunday, Jan. 18, at 7 p.m. Both Vermont PBS PLUS and WORLD are available over the air and on most cable services in Vermont and surrounding areas.

The broadcast schedule will give Vermonters unable to attend the event several opportunities to hear the author’s remarks. This is one of Rushdie’s first public appearances since his condemnation of the recent terrorist attacks in Paris.

Rushdie’s appearance is sponsored by the University of Vermont and the Vermont Humanities Council. For complete Vermont PBS schedule information and channel listings, visit vermontpbs.org.
