Personal fossil fuel divestment ("Personal Divestment Seminar", Burlington,
5/2) and on the institutional side of the discussion ("Carbon Risk
Forum", Montpelier, 4/28). Both tie to current, vibrant debates in the state.
While obviously tightly related, the two ideas are also quite different in
unexpected ways.
We're excited to have two great sets of speakers - groups that come at these
topics from different angles (...including the idea that one choice
individuals have when reinvesting divested funds is to shift their money into
VT businesses).
Of course the power or divestment was demonstrated as part of the
anti-apartheid movement. Among many leaders who support fossil fuel
divestment, Desmond Tutu recently said: "We fought apartheid. Now climate
change is our global enemy."
