Howard Center Presents International Speakers and Best-Selling Authors at Annual Conference
Burlington, VT—Howard Center will present its annual conference on June 3. The theme of this year’s event is “Overcoming Adversity: Bold Perspectives on Mental Health and Addiction.” Featured speakers include international speakers and best-selling authors Charles Blow, Nadia Bolz-Weber, Johann Hari, and Andrew Solomon who will reflect on current and future trends in mental health and addiction treatment, including themes of confronting stigma, improving access, continuing advocacy, advancing policy, and giving voice.
Howard Center’s Chief Medical Officer Sandra Steingard will join the conference presenters to describe her evolution as a psychiatrist and discuss some of the major critiques of the field, including drug-centered approaches to pharmacotherapy and need-adapted treatment– two essential ingredients for meaningful reform. Dr. Steingard is the editor of the recently published Critical Psychiatry, a guide for psychiatrists struggling to incorporate transformational strategies into their clinical work. She writes the blog, “Anatomy of a Psychiatrist,” published on www.madinamerica.com, and has presented at numerous international conferences.
Throughout the day, presenters will share their perspectives and personal stories–inspiring attendees to think boldly about current approaches to treatment and challenging them to create new pathways to overcome adversity, influence policy, and improve access to quality care that is inclusive and available for all. The conference is designed for a broad audience, including mental health and healthcare providers, educators, individuals and families impacted by mental health or addiction, representatives of state and local government, law enforcement, the judiciary, and community members.
The conference is Monday, June 3, from 8:00 am – 4:30 pm at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Burlington. Presenters will be available throughout the day to sign books. CEU credits will be available for a variety of professions. Visit http://howardcenter.org/conference-2019/ for more information and to register for the June 3 Conference.
