Doors open at 6:30pm for Info tables
Contois Auditorium, City Hall, Burlington, VT
Sponsored by: Save Open Space-Burlington, All Wards – Neighborhoods Planning Assemblies, and 05401.
Guest Speaker: Dr. Tom Angotti, Hunter College, New York
Author of Zoning Without Planning and The New Century of the Metropolis (Routledge, 2012).
This Housing Summit, hosted by Burlington’s All Wards NPA and organized by Save Open Space-Burlington (SOS-B), is an opportunity to look at housing options from a broader perspective than is offered by the Mayor Weinberger’s recent Housing Action Plan (HAP). The focus for the Summit will be planning neighborhoods and community, by and for residents of Burlington. We will also have presentations on four topics related to the HAP:
South End Enterprise Zone
Inclusionary Zoning
Accessory units and more
Students Housing
The talk by Dr. Angotti will be followed by a Q&A session, as will the four topic presentations.
Following the Open Space Summit in January, SOS-B was challenged to explore ways the city could expand affordable housing opportunities without sacrificing what remains of the natural environment. The Housing Summit will be a chance to address these issues as well as other topics ignored or inadequately treated by the city’s HAP. “This is an opportunity to bring ecological design thinking to what we build,” said local architect Diane Gayer, an organizer of the Summit. “Strengthening neighborhoods means including accessory units, stormwater gardens, and open space.” As a writer and speaker, Dr. Angotti reframes housing and development issues, and shifts the paradigm on what’s at stake. Event organizer Charles Norris-Brown said, “Just building more housing in Burlington counters what is really needed: rent control, job protection, livable wages, and better transportation options.”
The Housing Summit is free and open to all.
