Global Youth Service Day April 17

This Friday, April 17th, is Global Youth Service Day (http://www.gysd.org/).

To commemorate Global Youth Service Day, and to serve their community as AmeriCorps members, 16 ReSOURCE YouthBuild students will work with the Burlington Department of Parks and Recreation at 28 Archibald Street on Friday. They will be deconstructing 24 raised beds and preparing the site for a full scale remediation.

YouthBuild is a national high school completion program, empowering young people to build communities and futures through education, job skills training, and service while they earn their high school diplomas.

ReSOURCE operates the only two YouthBuild programs in Vermont, serving 32 students a year in Burlington and Barre. The program design, practices, and partnerships provide certifications and prepare students for entry into post-secondary education and future careers.

ReSOURCE YouthBuild students are high school drop-outs, often facing barriers to success such as poverty, homelessness, or other social disadvantages. Through YouthBuild, young men & women 16 to 24 years old can earn high school diplomas & trade certifications, while learning construction skills.

ReSOURCE partners with Vermont Adult Learning & Central Vermont Adult Basic Education to create Individual Learning Plans with each student; Community College of Vermont to enroll students in "Introduction to College Studies," offered free of charge; and regional businesses & contractors to give students access to the working world and to apply for jobs.

Successfully operating since 2004, RSYB receives funding from training fees, corporate & foundation support, and from construction, weatherization, and solar installation services performed by the YouthBuild
