Drive Electric Vermont and the Burlington Electric Department are inviting Vermonters to gather this Saturday to celebrate and promote the clean-air and cost-saving benefits of plug-in electric cars in support of the eighth annual National Drive Electric Week.
At the Drive Electric Week showcase event at Burlington Electric Department, local owners and experts will demonstrate the benefits of driving electric and provide helpful information about these super-efficient vehicles to interested Vermonters. Many models will be on display, including all-electric options powered solely by a battery and plug-in hybrids that travel on battery or gasoline. Vehicles registered to attend include: the Nissan LEAF, the Tesla Model 3, the Chevrolet Bolt and Volt, the Honda Clarity, the Smart ForTwo, the BMW i3, and the Volkswagen e-Golf. These vehicles have already traveled over 137,000 electric miles and their owners will be on hand to discuss their experience and answer questions on driving electric in Vermont.

”Electric car ownership is thriving in Vermont as prices come down and range increases on new and used vehicles,” said David Roberts, coordinator of Drive Electric Vermont. “We’re looking forward to another great Drive Electric Week event to help those interested in making the switch to driving electric. Many people are surprised how fun and affordable electric cars can be. Transportation is the source of nearly half of Vermont’s greenhouse gas emissions and electric cars offer significant emission reductions and other environmental benefits, especially when powered by renewable energy.”
“At Burlington Electric, we are leading through energy innovation to promote a cleaner, greener transportation sector for the Burlington community we serve,” said Burlington Electric Department interim General Manager Paul Alexander. “Sharing the benefits of electric cars with our business and residential customers and neighbors complements our continuing work to offer incentives and build new charging stations around Burlington. We have seen a significant increase in purchases since the start of our electric car rebate program, and we know increased numbers of charging stations are helping bring more clean transportation to Burlington.”
The number of electric cars registered in Vermont has grown rapidly over the past five years. As of July 2018, over 2,600 plug-in vehicles were registered in the state – a 40 percent increase over the past year. These cars are spread throughout state with 85 percent of Vermont communities home to an electric car.
Each year, Plug-In America, the Sierra Club, and the Electric Auto Association team up with local groups to organize events promoting the use of electric vehicles. This year, nearly 300 events are taking place across the country to celebrate National Drive Electric Week 2018 from September 8-16.
