CSWD to hold public hearing on Ordinance changes
The Chittenden Solid Waste District is empowered by the State of Vermont to enact ordinances to ensure that recyclables, compostables, trash, and other discarded materials, are managed in an efficient, economical, and environmentally sound manner in Chittenden County.
The CSWD Solid Waste Management Ordinance regulates how trash, recyclables, compostables, and other materials are separated, collected, and transported. It implements and furthers the District's Solid Waste Implementation Plan and the State's Materials Management Plan.
When needed, CSWD updates its ordinance. This most recent round of proposed changes range from simple clarifications to new regulations.
Mainly, the revised regulations codify mandates from Act 148 (Vermont's Universal Recycling & Compost Law), Act 175 (Vermont's Construction & Demolition Materials Recycling Law), and Vermont's E-Waste Law; and include a requirement for recycling education for occupants of multi-unit properties, a ban on scavenging from private recycling and trash containers, and requirements for event and public space recycling and food scrap diversion. It decreases the maximum size of scrap metal allowed in the landfill to increase recycling of that material and includes clarifications and updates.
