Laura Mann Center for Integrative Health Hosts Screening of Award-Winning Documentary, “Escape Fire:  The Fight to Rescue American Healthcare”

Welcoming Remarks by Patricia Prelock – Dean of the UVM College of Nursing and Health Sciences

Burlington – The Laura Mann Center for Integrative Medicine and a contingent of partners including The UVM College of Nursing and Health Sciences, Main Street Landing, Ayurvedic Center of VT, Pomerleau Real Estate and VT Center for Integrative Therapy will host a public forum and screening of the award-winning documentary film ESCAPE FIRE: The Fight to Rescue American Healthcare.

A 2012 Sundance Film Festival selection, ESCAPE FIRE examines the powerful forces that maintain the health care status quo--a medical industry designed for quick fixes over prevention and profit-driven rather than patient-driven care. The film tells dramatic patient and provider stories and follows leaders in the movement to transform health care at the highest levels of medicine, industry, government, and even the US military. ESCAPE FIRE is about finding a way out and saving the health of our nation.

The local, free screening will kick-off an important conversation about how integrative approaches will benefit the health and wellbeing of all Vermonters.  An emerging collaboration between the UVM College of Nursing and Health Sciences, the UVM College of Medicine, Fletcher Allen Health Care and the Laura Mann Center aims to bolster our health care system through collaborative and interdisciplinary efforts. Our goal is to bring innovative and thoughtful low-cost methods of prevention and healing into the costly structure in which we now operate.

Patricia Prelock, explains “as health care professionals we are often faced with feelings of frustration. As we work to treat the patient by addressing the disease or condition, we must give equal weight to understanding who a patient is. A strong relationship between patient and practitioner is crucial to healing and wellbeing. Faculty and students in the College of Nursing and Health Sciences and in the College of Medicine at UVM are committed to integrative medicine, the ‘whole person’ approach to treating our patients. We are currently engaged in a collaborative effort with the Laura Mann Center to identify and educate our community about the use and value of implementing integrative, evidence-based therapies in the treatment of disease.

Since 2008, the Laura Mann Center has been laying the foundation for this discussion by promoting the benefits of integrative health and serving as a bridge between patients and practitioners from all disciplines so that everyone in our community can access the most appropriate form of care. The Laura Mann Center is ready to take action, and invites all Vermonters to join in.
