Attorney General TJ Donovan announced today that he will convene the Racial Disparities in the Criminal and Juvenile Justice System Advisory Panel on Tuesday, August 29 at 2:00 pm. The meeting will take place in Room 10 of the Vermont Statehouse. The meeting is open to the public.
The legislature created the Racial Disparities Panel through Act 54 of 2017, and tasked the Attorney General with convening the body. The mission of the panel is to “review and provide recommendations to address systemic disparities in statewide systems of criminal and juvenile justice.” The Panel will provide recommendations regarding training and education for officials in the criminal and juvenile justice systems, review traffic stop data, and work to educate the public about the challenges of racial discrimination in the justice system.
Attorney General Donovan said: “Our Criminal Justice system should be free of racial bias. We need to work toward trust, transparency, fairness, and data-driven criminal justice outcomes. I look forward to working closely with the panel to support its mission.”
