2nd Annual Falls Prevention Awareness Expo set for September 28 in Rutland

RUTLAND, Vt. – Tai Chi Vermont and Southwestern Vermont Council on Aging will be co-hosting the 2nd Annual Falls Prevention Awareness Expo on Saturday, September 28 at the Godnick Adult Center in Rutland.

The expo, which is being held in conjunction with National Falls Prevention Awareness Week, will start at 12:00 p.m. and feature live falls prevention tai chi demonstrations and lessons, as well as a range of educational classes, activities and informational booths aimed at helping older Vermonters avoid falls both inside and outside of the home.  The event is free and open to the public.

“The inaugural falls prevention expo was a success last year, and we’re excited to bring the event back for a second year,” said Courtney Anderson, Nutrition Director with SVCOA. “We have a great lineup of community partners that will be hosting a range of fun and informative activities. There’s something for everyone at this event, along with great food and giveaways.”

The following organizations will be on hand to provide information and answer questions:

  • Balance Works – will offer footwear and orthotics suggestions
  • Castleton Community Center – will present information on the Matter of Balance program
  • Groovy Grannies – will conduct line dancing demonstrations
  • RSVP Bone Builders – will provide information on exercises for building strength, balance and bone density
  • Rutland City Police Department – will be creating emergency information cards
  • Rutland City Fire Department – will provide first responder feedback on falling hazards
  • Regional Ambulance Service – will conduct blood pressure screenings
  • Rutland Regional Medical Center Audiology Department – will provide information on ears, hearing and balance
  • Rutland County Sheriff’s Department – proper disposal of medications
  • SVCOA – will provide information on a well-rounded  diet for better balance
  • Tai Chi Vermont – will conduct tai chi demonstrations and mini lessons to promote balance and strength
  • Wilcox Pharmacy – will provide information on medication management, walking supports and in-home modifications for fall prevention

Additionally, Jill & Julie Catering at Coach’s Deli of Rutland will be providing food, free of charge, to those in attendance, and there will be a scavenger hunt and gift basket giveaway courtesy of Mr. Twitters and SVCOA.
